Chapter 10

THE NEXT MORNING, I woke up vomiting again.

My nipples were sore, too—and not simply from having been pulled and pinched and twisted the night before. That had happened before. They were swollen in a new way.

I touched my belly, wondering if I could feel it yet.

I had never gone into heat again. It had been well over a month since the last time King Leon had attempted to breed me.

Yes. I was certain I was pregnant.

I was going to have the King’s heir.

And I wasn’t going to tell him.

I remembered what Raphael had told me—that the king might not live much longer.

I had to get word to Raphael, had to tell him I was pregnant.

He would surely help me then.

If I could get out of here, I could tell him myself.

I sank down onto my blanket and gestured for Theon and Cyrus to come join me. I spoke quietly to keep the omegas in the pens around us from hearing through the open chain links of the fences that surrounded us.

“I’m leaving tonight,” I whispered to them. “Do you want to go with me?”

They glanced at each other nervously, but they both nodded.

“If I get caught and you two get away,” I added, “I need you to take a message to the king’s beta brother.”

“What message? And how do you know the king’s brother?” Cyrus asked.

“He was a... patron... of mine before I wound up here. He needs to know that I have important news for him.”

They both nodded solemnly. And we settled in for a long day of waiting for the night’s festivities to begin.

My escape plan was simple. When Octavius lined us up that night to take us out to the showroom, the three of us hung back until we were last in line.

As we moved from the pens to the showroom, I ducked down one of the hallways leading to an exit.

It was a stupid plan, born of desperation.

I heard a shout behind us—someone who had noticed were missing—and took off at a run.

I ducked around the corner, only to barrel into the chest of one of the beta guards who sometimes watched over us when Octavius was not around.

He grabbed my arms and held me tightly. “Hey, now. Where do the three of you think you’re running off to?”

A shout behind us reminded me that we were being pursued from that direction, too, and I struggled against the guard.

But it was no use.

I had one other possibility. I stared up into the guard’s eyes beseechingly. “Please tell the king’s beta brother that I have a message for him. Tell him—”

I was ripped out of the beta guard’s arms before I could finish my sentence.

“Octavius. I have a message I need to get to—”

“You’re not sending messages to anyone,” Octavius stated flatly. “You’ll be entertaining special guests tonight as your punishment for attempting to run away.”

With the handle of his whip, he landed a blow against my cheek that left me reeling. Then he turned around and marched us back toward the showroom.
